FAQ

  • What is an open call?

» An “Open Call” is us searching for talented performers that wish to fill a spot in our pre-planned projects that will be photographed and filmed for our social media accounts.

  • How do open calls work?

» Simply use our form on our open call page and we will get you started on the sign-up process. We do not refraining from posting the full sign-up steps so we can find people that are willing and ready to commit.

  • Where are practices held?

» Practice locations vary depending on the week and are already predetermined. They are held in around the Bay Area throughout the month.

  • When are practices?

» Practice is held on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons every weekend, while rehearsals take place on predetermined Friday evenings and some Saturdays and Sundays.

  • What’s the difference between practices and rehearsals?

» Practice consists of formation building, going over choreography questions, and overall cleaning of the dance such as timing, moves, etc. Rehearsals are the final practice session, at which point everyone should be expected to know the routine. Since rehearsals usually include multiple dances in one cycle, rehearsal time should only be used to fix minor issues and not for learning.

  • How do filming days work?

» You will be given a pre-planned time slot in which we will record the final version of the project to have it posted on our channels. During this day, you will also get your photos taken for our promotional material. Afterwards, we usually all go out to eat and hang out as a form of celebrating everyone’s hard work.

  • I have an issue with transportation, what should I do?

» There are many people who know public transportation routes or drive cars, so you can ask for advice on public transit or carpool rides can be set up.

  • I have a scheduling conflict, what should I do?

» Please message us asap and let us know about your scheduling conflict. We will find a way for us to accommodate as best as we can.

  • How much will this cost me?

» At minimum $15.00; this cost is determined by our videographer and photographer fees. Most fees are covered by Spectrum themselves, but we do require the cost of the filming day to be split evenly amongst all dancers.

  • What is the level of commitment required?

» We ask that you are at least able to learn your dance at home and have the specified parts memorized before coming to practice. If you’re struggling with a part, please let a project lead know and we will do our best to help you before or at practice.

  • How do I learn the dance?

» Our main source is YouTube videos, and many of us utilize different methods to learn them. We all learn from one main video, but you can try to find videos that have already been slowed down or you can use apps/browser extensions to either manually change the speed or mirror videos. A favorite method of ours is to download the video and use VLC Media Player to play them, which can change video speed, loop time marks, and even mirror videos all in one! If you still have questions or difficulty learning the dance, we will go over it during practice or you may also reach out to our project leads.

  • Is there any help I can get outside of practice?

» Yes! The lead or project leads are available to help with outside assistance.

  • Can I sign up for multiple projects?

» Yes! There is no restriction to how many open projects you sign up for. Just be aware that things fill up fast!

  • If there is no audition process, how are participants decided?

» Participants are decided on a first come, first serve basis. We also try to sift fairly through who signed up for one project versus people who have signed up for multiple.

  • I am a minor. Can I still participate?

» Yes, so long as you are over the age of 15- born before February 1, 2010- and you have your parents’ permission.

  • Are there any age or gender restrictions based on the projects?

» We only ask that everyone be at least 15 years of age, but we otherwise accept all dancers of all ages and backgrounds into our projects.

  • What does the end product look like? Do I get to take anything home with me?

» The final video will be published anywhere from 4-7 weeks after completion, unless issues with our videographers arrive. Along with it, the photos taken will be used as promotional images for the project. You are welcome to post your photos once the projects have been uploaded.

  • What are your COVID-19 regulations?

» Everyone on our team is fully vaccinated and some are boosted per their personal vaccination status. Many of us get tested regularly and follow strict COVID-19 policies to prevent the spread and protect ourselves and loved ones. Our COVID-19 Policies for Open Call Participants are as follows:

Performers in Spectrum and wishing to collaborate must be fully vaccinated (being fully vaccinated means that you have finished your vaccine, whether that's one dose or two, and two weeks have passed) and up-to-date with any additional booster shots that are needed to be fully vaccinated from COVID-19. If you cannot be vaccinated due to health or religious reasons, please let us know, with a brief explanation of your vaccination status, so we can assess the situation if it would be safe for you and others to be in the same space.

All performers agree to be masked when mask policies apply and agree to any testing necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19 once they sign up for a project. If you are exposed to COVID-19 at any point, please quarantine immediately and take 2 tests that are at least 5 days apart from one another; if results are negative, you will be allowed to practice with us.

We take COVID-19 very seriously as we have members that are immunocompromised or live/work with those who are, so please out of respect, look out for your fellow dancers.
